Will my student be able to play all the instruments during the instrument exploration?

The instrument exploration class is designed to have your student play all six primary instruments offered in 5th grade band/orchestra. This includes: flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, and violin.

Can we try out another instrument not listed (e.g. cello, tenor sax, french horn)?

Instruments that are not generally offered in 5th grade will not be available for trial during our group classes. If you'd like to set up a trial of any of the instruments not generally offered in 5th grade, please speak to an associate to make arrangements for a private Instrument Exploration - where you can select different instruments for trial in a one-on-one setting.

We've attended your instrument exploration class, but my student is still unsure of what to play.

That's totally normal! You can attend another class for $30 for another chance to play each instrument. If your student has more or less decided on one, but they are still unsure if that's what they will stick to, you may want to just rent the one they're most interested in. There is no cost for instrument exchanges when you rent with us!

Which instrument is the hardest/easiest to play?

The hardest instrument to play is the instrument that the student does not want to practice. Similarly,  the easiest instrument is the one that the student feels most excited about because they will be more likely to then practice the instrument more.

Is it safe to try out the instruments?

Bertrand's Music uses our hospital grade UVC treatment on the instruments and equipment (mouthpieces) before each class. We will supply each participant with their own individual mouthpieces and reeds for each instrument.

How many participants are allowed in each class?

The group classes we run in San Diego allow for a maximum of five students per class from March through mid-May. The classes offered from mid-May through September have a maximum of ten students per class. The class size is determined on the physical space we use for the classes (indoor large lesson room versus outdoor patio).

My student chose their instrument, what ensemble do they sign up for?

If they chose a wind instrument, then they will be signing up for band. If they chose the violin, then they will be signing up for orchestra.

Are there classes we can attend?

Yes, we have lessons for all instruments. Some of our locations (San Diego) will also offer Head Start Group lessons (during the summer) that will help you get a "head start" on your first year of school band or orchestra.

What if I can't find a class time that works for my schedule?

If you are unable to attend our Instrument Exploration Class you can schedule a one-on-one private session with one of our friendly staff members. The cost is $55 for a 30 minute private class. Please contact your local store to book the private instrument exploration.

How long are the classes?

Each class will run between 45-60 minutes. Please make sure you arrive promptly at the start of the class.

Where are the classes held?

Our San Diego location currently holds and runs the Instrument Exploration classes. For the classes scheduled from March to mid-May (smaller class size: 5 students max) - we utilize the indoor space of our large lesson room. For the larger classes held from mid-May through September (larger class size: 10 students max) we utilize the outdoor patio on the west side of our building.
